The video takes place during the day, out on the water. The person posting the video says they’re out by Seal Island, South Africa. After anchoring the boat there, it didn’t take long for shark action to pop off! Off the side of the boat, you see a large splash, followed by a humongous fin flying out of the water. Rewind and watch the beginning of the video again. Look closely, and you’ll see a small seal trying to escape the giant shark. Looking at the shark’s fin and side body, you can tell it’s humongous. The shark in this video could easily be over 10 feet long! That’s big, but not as big as these sharks can get. After studying shark bites on whale carcasses, researchers now believe great white sharks can grow to be around 27 feet long.
Is it normal behavior for sharks to hunt seals?
It is very common for sharks to hunt for seals, and as you can see in the video, the great white shark’s powerful, rapid movements don’t give the seal much time to escape. You can hear the people on the boat as they watch from their front-row seats. The camera angle is perfect since the person filming is on the boat’s upper level. As the camera scans the water for the shark and seal, the mood is tense and exciting. You can hear the camera person say, “it’s coming this way!”, referring to the speedy shark and seal. Then you hear a crowd of people on the boat exclaim, “WOOOOAH!” The shark emerges again. More people begin asking, “Did he get it? Did he get it?”. Everyone stares at the water, waiting for the shark to return to the surface. The only thing that could have made this video cooler was if there was another shark. While great whites were once believed to be solitary sharks, new research proves otherwise. Now, it’s clear that great whites will sometimes hunt in pairs. In this video, however, you only see one shark. But it’s a big one! Halfway through the video, it happens! The great white shark catches the small seal. The catch is evident when you see the shark’s fin thrashing. You can’t see the seal at this point. But the way the shark’s moving makes it easy to picture the bloody scene below the water. The seal is definitely now this shark’s lunch or dinner. Seagulls begin crying out and circling the shark-seal scene from the air. At the same time, the people on the boat are giddy with adrenaline. You can hear laughter and exclamations of “OOoooooOOO, Ahhh, and Ewwww.” There are a lot of emotions that take place when you see an animal get eaten. Nature can be intimidating and incredible at the same time. Watching this mighty great white shark catch his dinner is a great reminder of how raw and rough nature is. You might not be going out on a boat today to watch sharks. But by clicking the video below, you can also have a front-row seat to this shark’s meal! You’ll want to watch this video several times to appreciate the action. Everything happens so fast.
