In a recent video clip, we get to see one of the most incredible hunts between predator and prey that has ever been recorded. The clip was recorded from a distance and focuses on a large bison and a pack of wolves. While wolves are quite rare, they do still roam the United States and are among the region’s most powerful hunters. The bison is the largest land animal in the United States and can easily clear 2,200 lbs. when fully grown. On the flip side, a large wolf can only grow around 200 lbs., with most growing to a maximum of 180 lbs. Still, despite this massive difference in size, wolves regularly take down the much larger and stronger bison. In the video, we get to witness a pack of five wolves in the Lamar Canyon hunt a bison calf that is hiding with its mother. Like the efficient predators they are, the wolves encircle the bison and begin the dance of death. What happens next, however, is rather astounding. Right at the beginning of the clip, we can see one of the bison pick up a wolf (Dark Black, otherwise known as 993M) and flip it into the air over its head. As the wolf flies through the air, it somersaults like a gymnast that lost its grip while flipping on the bar. Despite the hard landing, the wolf leaps onto its feet and just barely makes it out from under the charging mother’s deadly hooves and horns. Although the video only focuses on the horn flip, we do know what happened after! With two bison defending the smaller calf, the wolves weren’t able to penetrate the defense and left soon after. Still, the next day they were able to get a large elk, so they didn’t go hungry for too long! Even more, the wolf, Dark Black, wasn’t injured too badly. After looking a bit sore and walking with a limp for a while, Dark Black was back to normal. Wolves are some of the top predators on the planet, but bison aren’t an animal that you can trifle with!
