Take baby elephants for example. These huge babies have won the hearts of thousands of individuals all over the world, particularly on social media, with their tenderness and pleasant demeanor. Baby elephants are referred to as “calves” like many other young animals. Elephants give birth after the world’s longest gestation period for any mammal. A baby elephant must be baked for a very long time! It can take between 18 and 22 months from the moment of conception till delivery. Given that elephants are the largest terrestrial animals in the world, it is not surprising that a baby elephant is quite large. Calves weigh about 250 pounds when they are born. The idea that a newborn animal may have a nearly complete brain is truly amazing. Elephants are birthed with a highly advanced brain that they use to recognize the complex social order of the herd and to nourish themselves using their dexterous trunks after nearly two years of growth in their mother’s womb.

Just like any other species of youngsters, elephant calves love to play! A video online showcases a calf blowing bubbles with its trunk underwater. You can see in its eyes that the calf is fascinated by this new discovery. There are a plethora of other activities elephants enjoy to stay occupied in the wild! Elephants have always loved taking mud baths. They love the soothing effect and respite that mud offers from the extremely hot temperatures of Africa and Asia, where they were born, in addition to romping and playing with their companions in mud baths. Elephants enjoy splashing around in the water with their friends and finding cool places to relax. Elephants are adept swimmers, therefore they are accustomed to being in the water. They can relish “fighting” with their buddies and other herd members while cooling off in the water. Blowing bubbles with their trunk is just an added bonus! When these animals are kept in captivity, they’re frequently spotted playing with the toys that are given to them, such as giant beach balls and soccer balls. They enjoy using their trunks to bat the ball around. This may provide hours of entertainment. Elephant calves like playing and running about with their companions from an early age. They begin to develop strong relationships that will last a lifetime practically from the time they are calves. Young elephants play more than older ones, as might be expected, yet both male and female elephants continue to enjoy playing well into their 40s and 50s.
