In this video, the grizzly bear repeatedly interrupts Otis, causing him to drop his first catch. But Otis is brilliant. When the audacious pirate bear attempts to steal the fish the second time, Otis drops it. “Don’t expect any more fish from me today, Buddy,” Otis seems to think. The pirate bear pulls the fish literally from Otis’s mouth for the third time. Otis looks much older than the grizzly bear, who can no longer hold the fish firmly. Eventually, Otis no longer bothers battling for his lunch. Finally, the grizzly bear takes the fish and rips it off with its teeth like a pie. Could Otis have understood that fighting for a fish is foolish and not worth the calories? All in all, it is heartbreaking to see Otis lose his lunch—nature is cruel.
What Do You Know About Bears?
Bears have been a part of human culture for centuries and still capture our imaginations. However, there are some interesting facts that we don’t know about bears.
Some Bears Use Their Lips Like a Vacuum
Sloth bears are unique in that they unusually use their lips. While most bears use their lips and tongue to pick up food, sloth bears use their lips like a vacuum. By sucking in air, they can create a suction that pulls ants and termites out of their nests. This unique feeding strategy is just one of the many ways that sloth bears have adapted to their environment. By using their lips as a vacuum, sloth bears can access a food source that other bears cannot. This allows them to live in areas where other bears would starve.
Black Bears Aren’t Always Black
Black bears come in various colors: brown, blond, and white. So why are they not always black? One possibility is that their environment determines the color of black bears. For example, if they live in a place with lots of trees, they are more likely to be black to blend in with the bark. Another possibility is that the diet of black bears determines their color. For example, if they eat a lot of berries, their fur may take on a reddish tint. While we may not have a definitive answer to this, bears are fascinating animals, and we still learn new things about them daily.
Polar Bears Are Marine Mammals
Polar bears are well-adapted to life in the Arctic and have some physical and behavioral adaptations that allow them to thrive in this harsh environment. They have thick fur for buoyancy, keeping them warm in cold climates. Their webbed forepaws help them to travel across water at high speed. Polar bears are also excellent swimmers and can hold their breath for up to two minutes underwater.
