Paddleboards and Dolphins
Paddleboarding is becoming increasingly popular all over the world. It doesn’t require the quite as much balance or practice as surfing and can therefore be enjoyed by a wider range of people. One of the purest joys when paddleboarding is to meet sea creatures and dolphins have got to be some of the most popular. In this vid, we first see the paddleboarder but then we become aware of fast-moving shadows just below the surface of the water. Your initial reaction is to think how special it would be to be paddleboarding with dolphins but then one dolphin gets a little carried away. They propel themselves out of the water as dolphins often do when they are swimming amongst the waves. The problem is that they have failed to notice that the paddle boarder is in the way so there is a mid-air collision. We hope that both the dolphin and the paddleboarder are not hurt.
Magnificent Dolphins in the Ocean
Dolphins are not just cute, they are also super intelligent. This is down to the fact that they have large brains! However, even though the overall size of their brain is bigger than a human’s, the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex which control intellect are smaller. Bottlenose dolphins can even recognize their own reflection in a mirror! It’s highly unlikely that this was a planned attack on a human because dolphins are generally fascinated with humans and want to make friends with us whenever they can. There are reports of dolphins forming strong bonds with human researchers and they seem to want to help humans out if they can. But dolphins also like surfing ocean waves and this is what brought this one into a collision with a paddleboarder going in the opposite direction. They have also been seen surfing in front of ships and riding the wake caused as the boat pushes through the water. Their smooth bodies allow them to travel across the unbroken part of the waves and trim the surf line just like human surfers do. Hopefully human surfers are better at avoiding paddleboarders!
