In this sequence, which has already been viewed over two and a half million times, we join a group traveling in small wooden boats called Mokoros.

Crocodile Encounter in a Narrow Channel

At the start of the footage, we get a clear view of a narrow channel through some flooded marshland with birds on either side. Pretty quickly, the guide spots a large croc up ahead and initially sounds excited and pleased rather than scared! He describes the croc as “big, huge” and the small boat continues to move closer to the partly submerged reptile. The croc appears to be oblivious to the presence of the boat but appearances can be very deceptive. This croc knows exactly what is going on and we are treated to a demonstration of just how fast these enormous animals can change direction and attack. All we can see now is a huge wave as the croc is under the water but the guide cries out “it’s coming around, it’s coming around” and sounds a bit more worried than he was before!

Crocodile Prey and Attacks

Amid cries of “it’s coming this way” and “get the paddle” we see a wave moving rapidly towards the boat. Of course, this is the croc moving quickly under the water and preparing to attack. In a flash of white foam, the croc accelerates out of the water and towards the occupants of the boat and…there the footage ends! We can only hope that everyone was unharmed. Crocodiles are carnivores and magnificent hunters. They prey on fish and crustaceans but will also tackle deer and buffalo. Crocodile attacks on humans are not unusual and around 1,000 people lose their lives in crocodile attacks each year. We still have a lot to learn about these amazing animals!
