They have been a species on the planet for hundreds of millions of years, but they still remain a mystery to us. It’s believed that these ancient creatures can’t die from old age. A crocodile’s lifespan ranges from 30 to 40 years, with the largest species living for up to 70 years. Yet, some crocodiles live a lengthy life and can live for more than a century. Crocodile size varies per species, however, many can reach lengths of over 23 feet and weights of over a ton! The average male is 17 feet long and weighs 1,000 pounds. Approximately 60 to 110 teeth are present in crocodiles, although they are continually being regenerated. Over 6,000 teeth can be lost by a crocodile in a lifespan. A video uploaded to Youtube showcases an alleged 125 year-old croc! This isn’t just any crocodile either! The angle from above shows just how big he is. In fact, this animal is so large, it practically looks flat in the footage.  One comment states: “What’s scary is it being that old and can still move around so damn fast.” Large crocodiles may move at speeds of 15 to 22 miles per hour. These swift crocodiles include some of the biggest species on the globe, the Nile, saltwater, and American crocodiles.

Caring for Wildlife

Many of the comments on the video of the old creature mention the poor living conditions. While it’s hard to tell from what we can see, it looks like the animal is kept in a very small square, with murky water.  An enclosure for a crocodile must be three times the animal’s length multiplied by two. Crocodiles require a huge, deep pool of water where they may fully submerge. Water should cover between 60% and 75% of the tank’s or enclosure’s bottom.  The animal must have access to enough dry land to emerge from the water, bask in the sun, and turn around without difficulty. The terrain ought to be spacious and have flat rocks, stones, or pebbles. Crocodile health will be impacted by trash and uneaten food-polluted water. Whether this footage comes from a zoo, a crocodile habitat, or anywhere else that houses animals, we hope the people in charge listen to the comments. Just because crocodiles have a frightening reputation, doesn’t mean they deserve any less love or care than our more beloved companions.  Take a look at the massive and ancient animal in the video below! We hope more and more crocodiles live to be as old as this one.
